Exotic animals have long been popular royal gifts. In 1235, Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II presented King Henry III with three leopards to celebrate his marriage to Eleanor of Provence.

Some historical accounts suggest the animals may have been lions rather than leopards, but either way, they became part of the Royal Menagerie, originally housed in the Tower of London.
