While not aggressive, the Bouvier has a reserved nature around strangers. However, it is extremely loyal to its family and calmer than many other breeds. Its name comes from Flanders, Belgium, where the breed originated. According to Animal Planet, the Bouvier des Flandres can weigh between 70 and 100 pounds and stand 23 to 26 inches tall at the shoulder. With a lifespan of 10 to 12 years, this large dog requires plenty of exercise and activities to stay healthy and happy, even if it is no longer used for farm work.
