The St. Bernard is a large and powerful working dog. It can weigh up to 260 pounds and stand 35 inches tall at the shoulder. Originally bred for rescue missions, St. Bernards were developed by the hospice at St. Bernard Pass to assist those stranded in the snow near the Italian-Swiss border.

The breed was named after Bernard of Menthon, an Italian monk who began breeding these rescue dogs in 1660. Throughout history, tales of their heroic rescues and brave temperament have become legendary. St. Bernards have been beloved in movies for decades, especially in family films. In the 1990s, kids adored Beethoven, which is available to stream on Peacock or Hulu. Beethoven, a St. Bernard featured in the film, became so popular that it inspired seven sequels between 1993 and 2014.
