Despite their efforts, the firefighters still could not identify the species of the trapped animals. Their small size and cries made it impossible to be certain. Another worry was that if a parent was nearby, the rescue could scare them off, causing them to abandon their babies.
This possibility added sadness to the situation. The presence of the parents could have made the rescue easier, but their absence made things more complicated. The team had to be even more careful and think about how to protect these now defenseless young animals.
